Light in the Darkness

It’s January 3rd and the news says that tonight we’ll be able to see the first meteor shower of the year, the Quadrantids. NASA reports that the Quadrantids are some of the brightest meteors, fireballs, in fact. As the days slowly get longer, Nature is reminding us that darkness doesn’t last forever.

As Christians, we call to mind the Magi who followed the star to the newborn King. Gazing in wonder at the night sky, they couldn’t help but follow the light. The Scriptures, too, contain fireballs of light, telling us of the saving power of God. May our hearts this New Year burn with the Truth of Light.

  • Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.  God saw how good the light was.  God then separated the light from the darkness.  God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. Genesis 1:3-5
  • The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwell in the land of gloom, a light has shown. Isaiah 9:2
  • I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. Isaiah 49:6
  • No longer shall the sun be your light by day, nor the brightness of the moon shine upon you at night; the Lord shall be your light forever, your God shall be your glory.  No longer shall your sun go down, or your moon withdraw, for the Lord will be your light forever, and the days of your mourning shall be at an end. Isaiah 60:19-20
  • You are the light of the world.  A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and then set it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand where it gives light to all the house.  Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds, and glorify your heavenly Father. Matthew 5:14-16
  • For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Luke 8:17
  • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  He was in the beginning with God.  All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be.  What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:1-5
  • Jesus said to them, “The light will be among you only a little while.  Walk while you have the light, so the darkness may not overcome you.  While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of the light. John 12:35-36
  • Do everything without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like stars in the world. Philippians 2:14-16
  • Now this is the message that we have heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. 1 John 1:5
  • The darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining.  Whoever says he is in the light, yet hates his brother, is still in the darkness.  Whoever loves his brother remains in the light, and there is nothing in him to cause a fall. 1 John 2:8-10
